<itunes:summary>Super excited to share my interview with Jason Barney. Jason is a long-time friend and former boss. As a music teacher back in the late 90's he taught himself to code and worked nights to build iTOOL (which was essentially Yahoo Store before Yahoo Store existed). I met Jason as employee #5 at iTOOL which later grew to 40+ people and was acquired by public company ONVIA.

Jason now runs a real estate acquisition company, owns a studio where he produces music artists and serves on multiple boards for various school and city functions in his town. I'm fortunate to have served as lead developer under Jason at iTOOL and I'm really excited to share this interview with you. Enjoy!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Mike Fioritto joins us today on this the latest episode of Can of Awesome. Mike is the Executive Director of Product Strategy and Project Management for Tribune Media Services and was my boss back in the day in the web services department of AZCentral.com. Mike has a background in photography & web and is now focused on new strategies for the co-existence of television programs in the world of Hulu, Netflix and DVR's and other set-top devices.

Mike gives his perspective on evolution of media having been at a large newspaper as it was forced to adapt and embrace the internet. You'll also hear a little bit of what he's working on these days at TMS. If you know a sharp Ruby or Python developer, Mike is hiring two software engineers for CastTV. Leave a comment for him on this blog or email Mike directly (his email address is mentioned in the audio outro of the episode). And check out some of Mike's photography below. <itunes:summary>2010 winds to a close today and like most people I'm looking ahead to 2011 with some New Year's resolutions. One of these is to resume podcasting. Today launches the "Can of Awesome" podcast - a series of interviews with amazing people to learn what makes them tick. These interviews will tend to be with company founders purely because I typically find these people to be some of the most interesting to talk with. But the focus of the interviews is not business - these are talks aimed at distilling a lifetime of experience and lessons into... well, a can of awesomeness. The idea is to release a periodic, brief (~30min) audio interview that can be easily consumed on the treadmill at the gym. The lessons shared here come from life-long learning and span generations and cultures. Ideally some of these words will be useful and and this podcast will allow them to fall upon ears that they otherwise wouldn't have reached.

This first episode is with a person who has had a massive developmental impact on me personally, my father Dave Tierney. In this episode he shares stories of his time as a student at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, working to help register African American voters in Mississippi in the early 60's and a story passed to him by his father about instincts and unfaltering loyalty to a friend in the face of desertion from everyone else.
